A "Cheat Sheet" - Contemporary vs. Modern Design Styles

How do you determine if a space style is modern or contemporary? Does something described as "Contemporary" always need to be "trendy"? There are always lots of questions surrounding these two styles!

As I mentioned in my post about the upcoming "Ask the Jeneral" feature, Contemporary and Modern Design Style references can be confusing, and the terms are often misused, even by design professionals. Upon a quick glance, they both seem to indicate essentially the same thing relating to time, but they have distinctly different meanings.

I have created a "Cheat Sheet" graphic, which compares and highlights the differences between these two styles and also shows a sofa style example for each one. This quick reference should help the next time you need some clarity on how and when to use these styles.

Make sure to also check out my recent posts that go into much more detail about both of these styles - Modern and Contemporary Design Styles - in my Design Styles Series.  These posts also provide some ideas of how to implement into your space plus examples of furnishings and decor.

What do you think about these two styles? Do you find them confusing or straightforward? Are there more questions? Please let me know in the comments below!
