The Impact of Contemporary Style and how to "Design for the Moment"

Sophisticated and innovative, Contemporary style represents “design of the moment." With a refined aesthetic that favors quality over quantity, this design style is always evolving and adapting to current trends and lifestyles.

Overview

Contemporary design emerged as a reaction to the rigid rules of Modernism from earlier in the 20th century. It began to take shape in the 1970s, influenced by minimalism, mid-century modern, and postmodernism. Over time, it has become a fusion of global aesthetics, sustainable practices, and technological advancements, making it dynamic and versatile.

What is the difference between "Modern" and "Contemporary" Style?

"Modern" style is tied to a historical period of time with more structured and

formal attributes. "Contemporary" style is not tied to any specific time period

and encompasses a much broader range of styles and flexibility.

Start with a Neutral Base

Choose neutral colors for walls and floors like whites, grays, and beiges, and accent with bold colors through decor and artwork. This creates a versatile foundation that can be easily updated with trend-inspired accents and "pops of color."

Use a Minimalistic Approach

Embrace a minimalist approach, prioritizing functionality and simplicity over excessive ornamentation. Incorporate clean lines and sleek details, embrace open spaces, and avoid clutter.

Maximize Natural Light

Maximize natural light through large windows and open spaces, which can blur the lines between indoor and outdoor environments.

Play with Textures and Materials

Incorporate a mix of materials such as glass, metal, and wood, and opt to focus on sustainable and eco-friendly options. For instance, create visual interest by pairing a concrete coffee table with a soft wool rug or a metal dining table with wood chairs.

Include Bold or Sculptural Pieces

Consider pendant lights and lamps that double as art pieces. Add organically shaped seating like a curved sectional or an accent chair with a unique shape and texture.

Add Statement Art and Decor

Create focal points - invest in contemporary artwork or large statement pieces that complement the space. Keep accessories minimal but impactful, such as a single vase, an abstract sculpture, or a bold patterned rug.

Support Sustainability

Choose energy-efficient lighting, eco-friendly furniture, and materials with low environmental impact. Incorporate plants to enhance air quality and add a touch of nature.

Contemporary Artwork

Artwork is a significant component of achieving a contemporary interior look. Contemporary Art - which can come in many forms and expressions - is defined as that which is produced today and/or made by living artists typically from the 1970s to present.
