Every once in a while, two tools you already love figure out how to work together — and the whole workflow gets better overnight. This morning Programa announced a new SketchUp Extension, now available in the SketchUp Extension Warehouse (in beta), starting with Product Library integration.

According to Programa's email announcement, the next stage of the extension will be an integration with Programa Schedules, which is currently in development. By connecting your model directly to your Schedule, it will introduce a new level of automation and help keep product information aligned as projects evolve.

Your Product Library,

now inside SketchUp!

Why this Matters

If you've ever modeled a space in SketchUp, you know the routine: you've already specified a product, but now you need it in the model. So you open the 3D Warehouse, type a keyword, scroll through pages of almost-right results, download something close, place it, realize it isn't quite right... and search again. Multiply that across a whole project and you've lost hours hunting for models instead of designing.

The new extension flips that process. Instead of starting with a keyword search, you start with the products you've already specified. From inside SketchUp, you can browse your full Programa Product Library by name, brand, type, material, or color. When you need a model, Programa searches the 3D Warehouse on your behalf — using the product image, name, and listing details to surface the closest matches. Pick the best one, download, and drag it straight into your model.

Even better: saved materials and swatches from your Product Library can be applied directly to faces and components in SketchUp — keeping your product selections and model development connected in one workflow.

Programa's new SketchUp Plugin Menu offers seamless integration with features such as product details, 3D Warehouse search, and quick addition to the materials panel, enhancing the design workflow.

The Bigger Picture for Spec Tech and Workflow

This is exactly the kind of integration I wrote about in my recent SpecTech post — the walls between specification tools and design tools are coming down, and the firms that adopt these connected workflows are simply going to move faster than the ones still copying data between programs.

I've been a Programa user for a while now and SketchUp has been my go-to 3D modeling program for years, so this one hits my desk at the perfect intersection. I'll share my hands-on impressions once I've put the beta through a real project.

Curious about setting up a connected spec-to-model workflow for your studio or project? Send me a message — this is exactly the kind of thing I love helping teams figure out.
